Presidents
Three administrators from Newfoundland and Labrador have been elected president of Canada's national governing body for hockey.
Don Johnson was elected president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association in 1975 and served until 1977.
Brian Wakelin was elected president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association in 1985 and served until 1987.
Wayne Russell was elected president of the Canadian Hockey Association in 1999.
Don Johnson
Johnson, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was transferred to St. John's by the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1959 and immediately moved into hockey, first as a player, next as a coach, and finally as an administrator and executive member.
Johnson's first interaction with the CAHA came in 1966 when he headed the delegation that worked out the CAHA affiliation for the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association.
NAHA secretary-treasurer Walter Clarke of Grand Falls was the other member of the negotiating committee.
After the CAHA affiliation was finalized, Johnson quickly gained much respect within Canadian hockey circles and was elected to the CAHA executive as vice-president for senior hockey in 1970. He moved up to first vice-president in 1973, and was elected president in 1975.
