Jim Penney's 14-year provincial senior hockey career is filled with
achievements. As a member of the powerful Conception Bay CeeBee's from 1958 to
1968 and the St. John's Capital's from 1969 to 1972, he was a very valuable
member of five Herder Memorial Trophy winners as provincial champions. He was
captain of the title-taking CeeBee's in 1960, 1961, 1965 and 1967 and played
with the club from its first game to its final one. He starred for the Capitals
when they won the Herder in 1970.
During his 14 seasons he played 328 games with 417 points from 221 goals and 196
assists, good enough for 23rd overall in the history of the competition. He was
equally valuable during the playoffs with a record of 76 goals and 54 assists
for 130 points. He had two goals and three assists in his two appearances in
Allan Cup play downs. In addition to his impressive offensive talents, he earned
recognition for his effective defensive performances.
Jim Penney demonstrated exceptional leadership with the CeeBee's and the
Capitals, both on and off the ice. His leadership was very evident during games
when he led by example and came to the forefront in the dressing room and during
practices in a manner that encouraged and instilled plenty of pride in his
teammates, especially his younger teammates. He was a very valuable asset to
every team with which he played.
Following his retirement from senior play, he captained old-timer CeeBee teams
to championships in Florida and Finland. He is a past president of Conception
Bay North Minor Hockey and coached many minor teams with that organization. |
