As a player and as an organizer, John Murphy was a valuable asset to hockey in
Gander, in Central Newfoundland, and in Newfoundland and Labrador.
After playing his early hockey with St. Bon’s in his native St. John’s, Murphy
moved to Gander in 1946. He established himself as one of the finest players of
his era on the ice, and off the ice played a major role in the founding of a
solid and permanent Gander Hockey Association, as well as in the expansion and
improvement of hockey in Central Newfoundland and in the province. His
contributions to hockey overall were important and, in many cases, vital.
His hockey ability and skills were such that Gander’s entry into provincial
senior hockey between 1947 and 1960 were, more or less, built around Murphy. His
skating, stickhandling and passing were such that when the first provincial
all-star squad was selected in 1951, Murphy was a member. He was picked up by
Grand Falls to play an exhibition game against the New York Rangers the same
year. Overall, he stood out as one of the most talented players within the
province during his 14-season career.
As a booster of hockey and a sincere benefactor in Gander, Murphy was a prime
mover in successful efforts to obtain a suitable rink for the community, and
served in a variety of positions, including president, on the Gander Hockey
Association executive. In addition, he filled the position of Central
vice-president for the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association in a very
productive manner, and generated a great deal of respect for his contributions.
Gander’s hockey community demonstrated their affection and appreciation for
Murphy April 9, 1960 when a special night was held at Gander Gardens. It was a
tribute to Murphy and his family for the manner in which he assisted hockey in
the town. |
