Joe Lundrigan was a very effective defenceman who was successful at all levels of hockey in which he participated.

Included in his career are 54 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and 12 games with the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League. Performing mostly as a defensive player in his own zone, Lundrigan finished his NHL career with two goals and eight assists. While a shoulder injury shortened his NHL playing time, he played well with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, where he was voted as the club’s top defenceman in addition to being named to the league’s second all-star squad for the 1971-72 season. His pro records include playing for top minor league teams at Oklahoma, Richmond and Hersey. Overall, he had an impressive professional hockey career.

His hockey started in the Corner Brook minor leagues and he worked his way through school and junior competition prior to joining the Herder Memorial Trophy winning Corner Brook Royals. He was the provincial senior league’s Rookie of the Year in 1967, a season during which he played a major role in the Herder going to the Royals. His inspired performances, both on and off the ice, were very beneficial to the Royals, to the Port aux Basques Mariners where he coached, and to the Labrador City Carol Lakers during their first senior season. Lundrigan was one of the better defencemen to ever play provincial senior hockey.

Lundrigan was a star player with St. Francis Xavier University in the Atlantic Intercollegiate Union for three years after joining the team in 1968. In fact, his impressive play for the university resulted in an invitation to Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1971 training camp.

Always a player who gave his all on the ice, Lundrigan was an asset to every team on which he played, from the youngest minor club to the NHL. He was a hard working, talented and determined player who earned the respect of his coaches, teammates, opponents and fans.
