Alex Faulkner was the first Newfoundlander to play in the National Hockey League. Drafted by the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League in 1960, he was the Most Valuable Player for that season. His National Hockey League contract was signed January 16, 1961 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he played one game with Toronto.

Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 1962, he played 112 National Hockey League games during three seasons with 20 goals and 17 assists for 37 points with 17 penalty minutes. His professional career also included playing with the Memphis Red Wings and the San Diego Gulls between 1967 and 1970.

His provincial hockey career started in 1962 with the Grand Falls junior club and continued with the Grand Falls Andcos where he won three Herder Memorial Trophies. He was a member of the Conception Bay CeeBees’ provincial senior hockey teams that won four Herders and, following his professional career, he was a member of St. John’s Capitals, Grand Falls Cataracts and Mike’s Shamrocks. His provincial senior hockey play involved eight Herder victories.

Regarded as the top offensive hockey player produced within the province, he was an exceptional playmaker and excelled as a scorer. In addition to his exceptional hockey talent, Alex Faulkner was a role model for younger players, always displaying tremendous sportsmanship as well as his great ability.

A provincial senior softball batting champion and an all-star soccer player in addition to his tremendous hockey career, Alex Faulker was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
