Nobody in the history of hockey within Newfoundland and Labrador fills the
definition of “builder” more than Frank Moores. He is the ideal member of the
Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame in the “builder” category.
Not only was Frank Moores responsible for the construction of the S.W. Moores
Stadium in Harbor Grace in 1958, he was also responsible for the establishment
of the Conception Bay CeeBees hockey club that enjoyed exceptional success from
1958 to 1969.
It should be noted that until 1986 when Bay Arena was open in Bay Roberts, the
Harbor Grace Stadium constructed by the group led by Frank Moores provided the
complete north area of Conception Bay with a top level hockey facility that was
utilized for many other community events and programs. The S.W. Moores Stadium
remains vital to thousands of residents of Conception Bay and Trinity Bay with
all levels hockey, including the Herder Memorial Trophy competition being played
there.
It can simply be said that it is because of Frank Moores’ concern and interest
that Conception Bay North has been played during the past 45 years. This is
indeed a remarkable contribution to the community by a remarkable leader.
In 1954 Frank Moores formed a group of local individuals into an association
that had the main objective and goal of constructing an artificial ice surface
facility to serve the residents of the area. Using the family business as the
catalyst to start the project, with vital support and assistance from his
father, Silas, Frank Moores forged ahead.
It was the driving effort of Frank Moores that created one of the finest and
most popular hockey teams the province has ever seen. The CeeBees won four
Herder Memorial Trophies during a ten-year period, making the playoffs every
season and the finals eight times.
Frank Moores was president of the CeeBee Hockey Association for its first nine
years, prior to his successful time in politics. His interest and leadership
made certain that and extremely large numbers of local players were provided
with the opportunity to play hockey at the highest level possible within the
province.
His foresight instilled great community pride while making certain that young
Conception Bay North hockey players, female and male, were afforded the chance
to play hockey in a fine facility. The fact that local residents are still using
the S.W. Moores Stadium extensively is a credit to Frank Moores. Frank Moores is
a hockey builder in the true sense of the word. |
