During his 26-year playing career Andy Sullivan established himself as one of the very best hockey players ever produced in Newfoundland and Labrador. A tall, shifty forward who displayed exceptional stick handling and great play-making ability, the star native of Calvert enjoyed brilliant success within local and provincial hockey and, at the late rookie age of 32, demonstrated his prowess within professional hockey.

Developing his talent on whatever ice surface he could, indoor artificial to outdoor ponds, he was 12 when he took part in his first organized competition in 1974 and he excelled at every level of hockey until the mid-1990’s.

His five Herder Memorial Trophy titles interestingly came in the province-wide setup with two with St. John’s Capitals and in the league-champions setup with three, one with Pouch Cove and two with Southern Shore.

In the St. John’s Junior League, from 1980 to 1983, he had 74 goals and 63 assists for 157 points over two seasons and added two MVP awards and two Most Gentlemanly awards to his pair of scoring titles.

His provincial senior regular schedule point’s total of 562 is the 11th highest in the League history as he added a remarkable 343 assists to his 183 goals in 204 games with only 86 penalty minutes. He added 90 playoff points with 35 goals and 55 assists. He scored five goals and set up nine others for 14 Allan Cup points. He also played senior hockey with Mike’s Shamrocks and Stephenville Jets.

Overall, provincially he won five scoring titles, was voted Most Valuable Player three times and earned the Most Gentlemanly Award twice. In addition, within the Avalon West Hockey League he had three scoring titles and three regular season MVP awards. He led Calvert to a pair of Inter City League titles while claiming two MVP awards and two scoring titles.

After declining the opportunity to play junior hockey in Ontario and a tryout with a National Hockey League club, Andy Sullivan donned the uniform of the St. John’s Maple Leafs of the American Hockey League in 1993 and he appeared in 32 games during three seasons with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points.

Andy Sullivan ranks extremely high with the top level of hockey players developed within Newfoundland and Labrador and is certainly considered among the best five or six in the hockey history of the province. Very skilled, very talented and very sportsmanlike, he was a member of numerous championship teams and collected numerous personal awards in a career that could be used as a model for all young athletes.
